When you’re committed to taking your life to the next level or you want to make a real difference in the world or you’re dedicated to developing yourself just because you think it’s the right thing to do, you will inevitably face resistance.
Unless you know how to deal with it, however, the power of your inner resistance will stop you before you even have a chance to move forward in life or work. In fact, inner resistance can set you up to fail and sabotage the progress you’ve already made.
Those who live with a true sense of greatness know that while inner resistance is a formidable enemy, we cannot fight it directly. It simply doesn’t work to try to force ourselves to be great.
There are ways to escape the clutches of inner resistance, and here are five of my favorites:
1. Run Toward the Positive
All forms of negativity are allies of your inner resistance. For this reason, as you climb toward your mountaintop, be on the lookout for anything in your life that is fueling self-doubt. Turn away from the negative and run toward the positive! Connect with supportive friends, watch uplifting shows, tune into positive radio programs, read an inspiring book, and/or connect with a teacher or guide to keep your life moving forward!
2. Relish Luxury
Luxury is a state of great comfort. The only way to experience it is to relax and receive. Resistance blocks your creativity by making you rigid and tense, whereas relishing luxury opens you up. Every kind of luxury opens us up, whether it is the luxury of time, a deep breath, a simple walk, a vacation, or quality goods. It is impossible to experience luxury and be resistant at the same time. Relishing luxury keeps inner resistance at bay.
3. Return to Nature
Experiencing the glory of a grand natural landscape does wonders for freeing inner resistance. Even thinking about the natural world can have an enormous effect on your state of being. When fear of greatness pulls you down, connect with nature to shift your perspective. Choose your favorite inspiring places on Earth—regardless of whether you’ve been there in person—and meditate on them when your fear of greatness holds you back.
It takes a lot of energy to climb to your mountaintop! Even though the climb is often exhilarating, you need to remember that you are pushing into brand new territory both within and without. When your fear of greatness takes hold, try resting. While you rest, think pleasant thoughts! Your mind will have an opportunity to recalibrate, and your resistance will lessen.
Your memory may be your biggest ally when it comes to moving past your fear of greatness and conquering inner resistance. Use your memory to support the climb to your mountaintop. Remember why you are on the open path in the first place and the goodness that the open path brings to your life. Remind yourself that you deserve the great life you’re creating and that your goals are important.
There are times on the open path to the mountaintop that we will all fear greatness. Knowing how to escape the clutches of inner resistance will allow you to be successful in your climb!
